Mokuzai, Meaning wood in Japanese and being home to rustic simplicity, the name Moku Collective was born. Moku Collective, founded in Byron Bay in 2020, is the work of local craftsman Matthew Johnson and showcases his profound love for raw, rustic materials, diverse cultures & interior design through unique, hand made furniture. Thrived by slow living and stepping away from fast production is the key focus for Moku Collective.
Taking recycled pieces of timber from 100 year old buildings, Johnson gives beautifully aged pieces of the natural world a new life as contemporary pieces of furniture with a Wabi Sabi feel. Each piece has its own unique charm and character, that are each hand-crafted to last a lifetime and define the raw beauty of materials used.
Moku Collective houses furniture made from many different reclaimed timber species from all over Australia. The signature dark treatment of wood is the real magic behind these pieces, adding an undeniable sense of calm to a space. We offer our own handmade designs available on our website and custom specifications made to order.
